Sincerely or Snobbery

What a surprise. Our recent city commission meeting was almost like a staged event. My first indication came when a commissioner at the very outset announced he had six letters from citizens who reside in the Plemons Eakle addition. Excuse me, commissioner. At least one of those letter writers has not lived in that neighborhood for several years. Is that an oversight or a lack of due diligence, similar to that used in selecting contractors for the downtown renovation. No matter. The petitions to remove the design standards contain far more signatures in opposition.

More important is the attitude of those who spoke in support of the ordinance. One person was overjoyed that the restrictions were better than deed restrictions. Those of us who have lived and purchased property here were hoping to use our property as we see fit and not have undue restrictions placed on us and our property.

Upside-down Priorities

As we attempt to remove the fallen tree limbs caused by the recent rain and snow storm, it is very easy to forget the other problems occurring during the storm. Street flooding and numerous underpasses were impassable causing a real cluster drill for police and emergency workers. We are lucky no major crimes were occurring as our officers were either stranded by rising water or using patrol cars to stop motorists from evading barricades to drive into flooded underpasses. These are situations that usually occur with every moderate to heavy rainfall each year.

Our City Commission, Whose City Commission?

When you brought us in 2007 the Downtown Amarillo Action Plan Initial Urban Design Discussions, we were not suspicious, and we trusted our city leaders. We did not know nor did we discuss it, so we did nothing. Were you empowered?

You brought us in 2008 around January through April, Operation Clean-Sweep. Some of us knew, most of us did not. Some of us fought the freedom grab. Some of us just let our freedoms be snatched from us. Were you empowered by our passiveness?

Time to Sign the Petition

The City Commission has spoken but, hopefully, their decision will not be the last word. Now it is time for the citizens to speak and be heard.

Are the (Amarillo) Citizens for Property Rights so far to the right and are the commission and planners so far to the left as evidenced by their socialistic agenda to seize and control individual property rights?

The UN program referred to by the commissioners was rejected by our own federal government which is a surprise in itself. Rejection at the federal level should indicate that sustainable growth may have some serious flaws. But, I am sure that our local mayor, commission and planners have done due diligence to ensure that our property rights will not be compromised.

Bad things still happen

A parent’s future dreams for their baby can all stop with a heartbeat. That is what happens each day when over 70 infants are stillborn. Half of these stillbirths occur in healthy babies who are near their due date, and one in six of those stillbirths happen during labor. Every day 13 babies die due to SIDS and other sudden unexpected infant deaths along with more than 80 babies die before their first birthday. Countless lives are lost due to miscarriage.
